2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid

If you make a hybrid, it better get good gas mileage. The 2010 ML450 Hybrid gets 21/24 mpg city/highway, which will make it the most efficient luxury SUV on the market that runs on gasoline and isn't named Lexus. Only the BMW X5 diesel gets better mileage, at 19/26. The most fuel-efficient ML with a standard V-6 engine gets 16/21 mpg. This all-wheel-drive hybrid also packs 335 horsepower and 380 pounds-feet of torque, which closes in on V-8 offerings from the competition. In 2009, Mercedes upgraded the ML's interior and added a sophisticated infotainment system and a revised instrument panel and controls. It also brought a new diesel version of the SUV to market that gets 18/24 mpg. The hybrid system in the Mercedes is based on a joint program with BMW, GM and Chrysler, yet the ML450 Hybrid is the most efficient hybrid of this type to be produced by any member of that group. While mileage may not matter to shoppers in this price bracket — we guess the ML450 Hybrid will be in the high-$50,000 to low-$60,000 range — the green halo may be worth the investment, especially if it can perform as well as other M-Class models.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe
The next-generation E-Class sedan was revealed on the eve of the 2009 Detroit auto show, and now, shortly before the Geneva Motor Show, the company has revealed plans for its first-ever E-Class coupe, which will go on sale stateside in June. The new model will slot below the $107,900 CL coupe and above the $48,100 CLK coupe, which might not be built much longer now that the E-Class two-door is on the scene. While Mercedes announced a number of trim levels for the European market, the U.S. will get the same two power plants found in the current E-Class sedan. The E350 will feature a 262-horsepower V-6 engine, and the more powerful E500 will feature a 382-hp V-8. The new, more powerful, more efficient direct-injection gasoline engines that will be offered in Europe will likely take another year or two to make it to the U.S.Features will most likely mirror the new E-Class sedan. We'll have more information on pricing closer to the on-sale date.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Just before the official opening of the 2009 Detroit auto show, Mercedes-Benz showed off its all-new E-Class. Going on sale this summer as a 2010 model, the new E-Class gets an entirely new exterior and interior while carrying over basically the same engines it sports in the 2009 models. All-wheel-drive 4Matic models will arrive after the rear-wheel-drive models go on sale this summer. Diesel versions, wagons and powerful AMG models will follow next year.So what's the big deal about a new E-Class? It's a new E-Class, and it steals its profile from the new design Mercedes slathered on the entry-level C-Class. When you get to the front, though, things change radically. While we might not mind the S-Class-like grille or the return of the hood ornament (will folks still steal these?), the headlights just don't look right. Supposedly the models shown are for the European market; those bound for the U.S. will receive subtle tweaks. Are we focusing on looks a bit too much? Maybe, but with nothing new under the hood — Mercedes does promise slightly better fuel efficiency — there's not much to talk about right now.

2010 Mazda Mazdaspeed3

Mazda already released images and information on the new Mazdaspeed3 for the European market, but it's just now handing out details about the U.S. model at the 2009 New York auto show. The car is based on the next-generation Mazda3 hatchback, but it retains the same engine as the outgoing Mazdaspeed3. The company said it didn't need to add more power because 263 horses going to the front wheels of a compact car is plenty. After testing and generally fawning over the outgoing Mazdaspeed3, we'd have to agree. However, the company wasn't going to just let the hot hatch go untouched elsewhere. The new body of this generation is more rigid than before, which allowed Mazda to make the suspension firmer without sacrificing ride comfort. The tires are also wider with more grip; a set of 225/40R18 Dunlop SP Sports is standard. The hydraulic steering also adds electric assist to make low-speed steering lighter. The brakes have also been mildly updated, as has the transmission's gearing. There will be just one trim level of the 2010 Mazdaspeed3, which comes with upgraded black cloth compared with the Mazda3. A Tech Package with navigation, keyless entry, push-button start and a 10-speaker Bose sound system will be available, but there won't be a Grand Touring trim with leather seats, as there was in the outgoing model lineup. The company says it will still be the most powerful front-wheel-drive car under $25,000, but no firm price has yet been released.

2010 Mazda Mazda3
Mazda's compact car has been a grand slam for the company since it debuted in 2004. It's Mazda's most popular car worldwide, and even the 2009 model holds up well against recently redesigned competition from Honda and Toyota. The 2010 adds slightly more power and slightly better fuel economy, and it sports all-new looks inside and out. We really like the new shape of the front end, especially the flares on the front fenders, which resemble the new Mazda6 sedan. Even in profile and from the rear, the 2010 Mazda3 looks radically different while still being recognizable as a Mazda. That's a tough task.Inside, the Mazda3 looks to maintain its classy feel with a sloped center stack and a new scalloped gauge cluster that flows over the center stack and, on higher trim levels, also houses an integrated navigation screen.Again, the Mazda3 is split into two trims, the Mazda3 i, with a smaller 148-horsepower four-cylinder, and the Mazda3 s, with a larger 167-hp engine. While power has been upped versus the 2009 model, so has fuel economy, but just slightly. The i gets 24/33 mpg city/highway with the automatic, and the s gets 22/29 mpg with the automatic. Neither engine beats the competition on the mileage front — the 2009 Toyota Corolla gets 27/35 with an automatic — but the Mazda3 has always been about the fun driving experience.Unfortunately, base models will not come with standard stability control. It and ABS will be optional equipment. We'll get more information on the features breakdown later this week. We're impressed with the looks, the interior and the power, if a bit concerned that the lower mileage numbers might turn off consumers.

2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata

It's hard to believe 20 years have passed since Mazda introduced the Miata roadster to America, and it did so at the 1989 Chicago auto show. That's why the 2009 version will debut in the Windy City as well, with a revised look and a mildly tweaked engine. In the appearance department, the front end gets a new grille and headlight treatment that significantly alters the look of the MX-5. There's clearly a "face" up front that almost seems to smile at you. Other exterior modifications, to the taillights and side sills, are minor in comparison. Inside, Mazda says the seats are more comfortable and there's now more storage space in the center console. The engine remains basically the same, with revisions to add 1 horsepower. More importantly, the redline is now set 500 rpm higher, at 7,200, which should make the already-spritely MX-5 even more so. Mazda says mileage is also increased, but it's not saying how much.As in 2008, the MX-5 comes with either a manual soft-top or a power-retractable hardtop. The soft-top starts at $22,750, while the retractable hardtop starts at $25,390, not including a $670 destination charge.

2010 Lincoln MKZ

Ford's trio of midsize sedans is topped by the Lincoln model, the MKZ. The previous MKZ didn't do much to distinguish itself from its less-expensive Ford and Mercury siblings, but the 2010 edition looks to add more luxury touches inside to help set itself apart. The dashboard is definitely different, with the LCD navigation screen mounted high on the dash, unlike its low position in the Fusion and Milan. This is the same exceptional unit found in the larger Lincoln MKS. Also borrowed from the MKS are the upgraded leather seats. Lincoln says that leather is the same covering that's in the MKS, which we found exceptionally comfortable. Under the hood, the MKZ comes only with the top-of-the-line engine from the Fusion lineup, the 263-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6. Lincoln says it shaves .6 seconds off its 0-60 time, down to 7.1 seconds, which is about as fast as the competition The six-speed automatic transmission features a manual-shift feature as well. The MKZ will also feature all-wheel drive as an option. There will be two trim levels, the base MKZ and a sport model with a more aggressive suspension, stiffer shocks and 18-inch wheels.Whichever model people go with, we're sure of two things: They better like that grille, and if they don't, a lot rides on the interior winning them over.

2010 Lincoln MKT

The three-row crossover segment has exploded in recent years, with nearly every automaker releasing a family-hauler that's neither an SUV nor a minivan. Lincoln's all-new MKT is neither of those things, and it sure doesn't look like it wants to play nice, with a giant grille that's less Cheshire cat and more snarling lion. The radical looks don't end there. The MKT has a single, thin taillight breaking up the rear hatch, which is surprisingly elegant. Overall, the shape is much more SUV than the Ford Flex's boxy, minivan-ish look. If you can't tell, the MKT and Flex share a platform and many features, like the optional second-row dual seats with a fridge between them. The interior reminds us a lot of the new Lincoln MKS, from the similar buttons to the cushy seats. There are also a lot of high-tech options, like a navigation system with live weather, sports scores and traffic information. Ford's new automated parking system and MyKey nanny device will also be optional, as will be a blind spot warning system. There's a lot of power under the hood, too. While the base engine is a not-too shabby 268-horsepower V-6, Ford is offering its new 355-hp, EcoBoost turbo V-6 in it as well. That model will come standard with all-wheel drive, while that will be optional on the base model. Both powertrains will be available at launch this summer. We're pretty impressed with the looks of the MKT and can't wait to see it in person. Hopefully Lincoln will bring out another color, because we bet the MKT looks great in black.

2010 Lexus RX 450h

Green drivers who like a little luxury will be impressed with the redesigned RX 450h. The hybrid crossover gets the same redesign as its gasoline sibling, the RX 350, but it also gets an upgraded hybrid powertrain. The new system pumps out more power — 295 hp — than both the 2010 RX 350 and the 2008 RX 400h it's replacing. Unfortunately, Lexus didn't provide mileage figures; all it's saying is that the new RX 450h is more efficient than the outgoing model, which got 27/24 mpg city/highway in the front-wheel-drive model and 26/24 mpg in the all-wheel-drive model. Lexus says the new all-wheel-drive version will generate more power from its regenerative braking system because it's connected to all four wheels.Like the RX 350, navigation will be optional, as will be features like a pre-collision system and adaptive front lighting. The hybrid will also feature optional LED headlights.

2010 Land Rover LR4

Land Rover's LR3 SUV will be replaced by the LR4 for the 2010 model year. Though the new model's profile is similar to its predecessor's, it gains new styling cues that better align it with the rest of the Land Rover family. Additional changes to the LR4 include an updated interior and the installation of a new standard V-8 engine that makes more power. The LR4's front-end styling is significantly different from the LR3's. Changes include a new bar-style grille and new headlights. The back of the SUV still features its predecessor's unique asymmetrical liftgate styling, but the taillights now have a clear-lens design. On the whole, however, it looks similar to the LR3.The LR4's new V-8 engine is larger and more powerful. It displaces 5.0 liters, makes 375 horsepower and 375 pounds-feet of torque, and benefits from direct-injection technology. There are more changes under the sheet metal as well, including a revised suspension for better on-road performance, according to Land Rover.Interior changes include a revised center control panel that features a new button layout, a new steering wheel, new front seats with longer bottom cushions and LED ambient lighting.

2009 Kia Soul

Kia's all-new Soul is a major step forward for the company. Not only is the vehicle directly aimed at a youth market that's currently dominated by Scion, it's also the first Kia that strays into untested waters in terms of out-there styling.Even though its looks are wild for a Kia, they're not as wild as either the Scion xB or the just-announced Nissan Cube. That could make the Soul more attractive to more people, despite recent theories that polarizing designs are what people want.Sized directly between the smaller Cube and the larger xB, the Soul also sports a number of trim levels, from a stripped base model, sans air conditioning, to a top-of-the-line Soul Sport. What will confuse buyers most are likely the oddly named middle trims, the Soul+ and Soul!Kia wants you to pronounce those "Soul Plus" and "Soul Exclaim."The Soul+ adds air conditioning, and it and the other top trims also offer standard stability control. Other big differences between the base model and the Soul+ include:
Black door handles versus body-colored handles
Old-school locks versus keyless entry
No-tint glass versus rear privacy glass
15-inch steel wheels versus 16-inch alloys The Soul! and Soul Sport add 18-inch wheels, a power moonroof and fog lights. We're guessing the Soul will also start well below the prices of the xB and the Cube.

2010 Kia Forte Koup

Kia debuted its new Forte sedan at February's Chicago auto show, and we knew a two-door variant was on the way. Today, the company unveiled that coupe, calling it the Forte Koup. We're not sure why automakers feel the need to mess with the English language, but considering the trim levels of the Kia Soul use "!" and "+" in their names, this isn't quite as annoying. The bigger news is that the base engine gets 25/34 mpg city/highway, which is similar to the Focus' mileage and 1 mpg less than the Civic coupe's 26/34 mpg. However, the Kia has at least 10 more horsepower than either. There are just two trim levels: the EX and the SX, which adds a more powerful engine and returns 22/32 mpg with a manual transmission and 23/31 mpg with an automatic.Standard equipment on all Forte Koups include 16-inch alloy wheels, stability control, height adjustment for the driver's seat, cruise control, a six-speaker sound system, Sirius Satellite Radio, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, USB and standard auxiliary audio inputs, and Bluetooth hands-free phone connection.Price will play a big factor in determining the Forte Koup's value, but if recent releases like the affordable Soul are any indication, we'd guess the Forte Koup will be competitive.

2010 Kia Forte
For the past few years, Kia has been playing catch-up with Korean partner Hyundai in the styling department. With the release of the 2009 Optima, Kia says it has a new corporate look, and the all-new Forte carries that new style into the compact sedan segment with eyes clearly set on the big players, like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, and — to a lesser extent — even the Hyundai Elantra. The second our eyes saw the first picture of a Forte, we immediately thought "Civic" in terms of styling. It's hard not to think that way, with the thin, horizontal headlights and the raised lines on the hood sweeping up into the A-pillars. Heck, even the trim levels of LX, EX and SX sound like Honda terminology. Two four-cylinders will be available. The thriftiest will sit in the LX and EX trims, with a more powerful, 173-horsepower engine in the sport-oriented SX trim, which also gets a sportier suspension setup. The base engine will get an estimated 25/34 city/highway mpg with a four-speed automatic transmission. The LX and EX will also come with an optional Fuel Economy Package that adds a five-speed automatic and low-rolling-resistance tires that boost mileage to an estimated 26/36 mpg city/highway. Mileage numbers were not released for either the SX model or the manual transmissions. The Forte's estimated mileage is right in line with the competition: The Focus gets 24/33 mpg with an automatic, while the automatic Toyota Corolla gets 27/35 mpg. The Forte also sports one of the larger trunks in its class, at 14.7 cubic feet. That's compared to 13.8 cubic feet in the Focus and 12.3 and 12 in the Corolla and Civic, respectively. Standard safety equipment on all Forte models includes stability control, antilock brakes and active front head restraints. Other standard features include a stereo with CD, auxiliary input and USB input. Move up to the EX and SX trims, and you get power windows, keyless entry, air conditioning, a six-speaker surround-sound audio system with steering-wheel controls, and cruise control. Bluetooth is also standard on all trims, which is a rarity for this class. Fifteen-inch wheels are standard on the LX, while the EX gets 16s, and there are 17s on the SX. The new look, standard features and fuel-efficient engines make the Forte seem like a winner. As with all things, though, pricing will be the final determination on whether this compact sedan measures up to some hefty competition.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Chrysler is on the brink of anything from filing for bankruptcy to complete collapse as a business. Its business happens to be building cars, trucks and SUVs, and the Jeep brand has been especially good at designing SUVs that its loyal fans enjoy. With the 2011 Grand Cherokee's urban style and revised unibody platform, the brand may be straying too far from what made it what it is for Jeep loyalists. The style is actually quite sophisticated and can hold its own with the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano in the looks department. However, while it looks slick, we can't help but wonder what a Jeep fan is thinking right now. Is this an SUV that screams Jeep? The new unibody construction likely means a much better ride on the road than the old Grand Cherokee. It's based on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, after all. We'd assume the Grand Cherokee will still pass the Rubicon Trail test and be "trail rated," but questions will remain. We give Jeep credit for introducing the very off-road friendly Wrangler Unlimited four-door a few years back, which allows the Grand Cherokee to make this move to be more of a soft-roader. There is a new suspension system the company promises will make it off-road capable with adjustable settings, but it is clearly aimed at the general car shopper. How does it do on this front? Not so good, at least on paper. The 2011 Grand Cherokee will get a much more powerful V-6 base engine putting out 280 hp compared to the outgoing model's 210 horsepower, while getting slightly better mileage, up to 16/23 mpg city/highway from 16/21 for the two-wheel-drive model. This power bests the Edge and Murano by 15 hp, but the mileage is better for the competition with 17/24 mpg and 18/23 mpg, respectively.New CAFE standards go into effect for the 2011 model year, and we're wondering that a company without one 31-plus mpg model in its lineup can afford not to get better mileage in the base model. A Hemi V-8 will also be available with 360 hp and 390 pounds-feet of torque and, of course, V-8 mileage at 14/20 mpg for two-wheel-drive models.Three trim levels will be available at launch: the base Laredo and mid-level Laredo can be had with either engine, while the top Overland trim only comes with the Hemi V-8.The numbers paint a bleak picture for what otherwise looks like a pretty nice SUV. The interior certainly seems like a big improvement, and there are many creature comforts that we're seeing in other top models.Bi-xenon headlights come standard on Limited and Overland trims while there is optional equipment including a dual pane panoramic sun roof, a power liftgate and adjustable headlights that adjust to meet outdoor conditions. Safety options like blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic detection systems, adaptive cruise control and a forward collision system are all available.

2010 Jaguar XF, XFR

Jaguar has revealed its first performance version of the XF. Last year, the automaker released the all-new model to rave reviews and sales that outpaced the entire Jaguar lineup. Then the economy turned, and the XF was no longer a shining star. The 2010 model adds two new engines, including a supercharged V-8 powering the new XFR. Its 510 horsepower is more than impressive and competes directly with high-powered models from German automakers BMW, Mercedes and Audi. The real surprise, then, isn't that the XFR hits 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, it's the car's combined mileage of 22.5 mpg. That's better than a V-6 Honda Accord, which has a combined rating of 22 mpg. Ratings of 510 hp and 22.5 mpg do not compute. Those looking for some extra power but not that much extra power have a new 5.0-liter V-8 sans supercharging. Found in the Portfolio and Premium trims, its more-than-respectable 385-hp rating is also complemented by good mileage: 24.5 mpg combined. The base model's 300-hp V-8 remains unchanged from last year. The two new V-8s replace the outgoing 420-hp, supercharged V-8 found in the XF Supercharged. The XFR also gets some more aggressive bodywork.

2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

Infiniti's G series of entry-level luxury cars with a sport enthusiast bent has just gotten bigger. Besides a sedan and coupe, Infiniti now has a retractable hardtop to put up against the competition.Like other G37s, the convertible features Infiniti's superb 3.7-liter V-6 engine producing 325 horsepower. It's teamed to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission. We're big fans of the manual in other applications and are glad Infiniti is offering it in this model. Automakers often feel that convertible drivers won't want to shift their own gears. This may be a big advantage for the G37.Another advantage is the G37's looks. While Infiniti says it looks good with the top up or down, in our mind it looks superb without its top and merely above average with it up. The company also has an optional custom-designed Bose sound system that takes wind noise and speed into account to control the volume. There are two trim levels: the base G37 convertible and the G37S convertible Sport 6MT. The Sport model features the six-speed manual transmission, 19-inch wheels, larger brakes and a sport-tuned suspension.

2010 Honda Insight

The 2009 Insight is Honda's new "Prius fighter." How do you fight a Prius? With a lower price and comparable gas mileage. Honda promises the price — which won't be determined until closer to its April on-sale date — will be below that of the Prius, which starts at $22,000 for 2009. As for mileage, the Insight's EPA-estimated 40/43 mpg doesn't touch the current Prius' 48/45 mpg rating, and the 2010 Prius that will be introduced in Detroit is rumored to be still more efficient. Early reports, however, are that the Insight exceeds its EPA estimates substantially, so we shall see.Like the original Insight, which sold in the 2000-06 model years, the new generation comes only as a hybrid, though this one has five seats instead of two. Like the Prius, it's a hatchback with folding rear seats. All other hybrid cars to date have sacrificed cargo space or folding seats, or both. The Insight wasn't technically designed from the ground up; from the B-pillars forward it shares its underlying structure with the Honda Fit, but behind that point it's specifically designed to accommodate occupants, a gas tank, a high-voltage battery and associated electronic components — something hybridized gas-only models never do efficiently. Honda thinks of the Insight as a subcompact car, but the EPA classifies it as a compact based on its interior volume. In effect, the Insight can accelerate on electric power alone up to 30 mph — or 50 mph when going downhill — but doesn't give the same silent electric-only experience as most hybrids. Honda says the big advancements in this new generation of Integrated Motor Assist are manufacturing cost and durability. There's now an "econ" mode to help maximize mileage. As for the car, it distinguishes itself with a sporty driving character. The Insight comes in LX and EX trim levels with identical cloth upholstery and quality finishes. The EX is mainly distinguished by functional features, including cruise control, a USB audio interface and heated side mirrors with signal lights. The EX also adds alloy wheels, seatback pockets, visor vanity mirrors, a center armrest storage console between the front seats, and steering-wheel controls, including paddle shifters for the standard continuously variable automatic transmission (an odd marriage). The EX can also have an optional navigation system and Bluetooth compatibility. Satellite radio is not offered. Both trim levels have six airbags and antilock brakes, but only the EX includes an electronic stability system with traction control.

2010 GMC Terrain

For years, car fans have lamented a practice called "rebadging." That refers to a large automaker like GM taking a car from one brand, changing a few minor details and selling it with a different name under another brand. Essentially, just replacing the badge or emblem.GM has sworn to stop rebadging, yet here is the Terrain, GMC's version of the recently announced 2010 Chevy Equinox SUV. We wouldn't call this just a rebadging, though; it seems GM has changed every piece of sheet metal on the Terrain to make it stand out. And stand out it does. Most noticeably, the boxy fender flares announce to the world that this is a truck-buyer's SUV, which happens to get 30 mpg on the highway. In case you didn't notice, it also has a manly grille with lots of chrome. While we admire the company for changing so much, we'd have preferred an SUV identical to the Equinox with a "GMC" logo instead of the Chevy bowtie. Both get the same engine choices: a base four-cylinder and a more powerful V-6.The Terrain does increase cargo volume by 0.2 cubic feet and passenger volume by 0.1 cubic feet. Standard on the Terrain is a rearview camera, 17-inch wheels and an eco-driving mode to help the four-cylinder engine return better mileage.

2009 GMC Yukon Denali Hybird

GMC's upscale Denali trim line will become available on the Yukon Hybrid for the 2009 model year this May. The Yukon Denali Hybrid receives modest enhancements to its exterior, including new 22-inch chrome wheels and a more luxurious cabin. It features the same gas/electric powertrain as the regular Yukon Hybrid, and it gets the same EPA-estimated 21/22 mpg city/highway in rear-wheel-drive form. The Yukon Denali Hybrid has seating for eight people in three rows. Standard features include heated and cooled leather front seats, heated second-row seats, a navigation system with a backup camera, and a Bose audio system. The SUV also features the MagnaRide adaptive suspension system. The Yukon Denali Hybrid's extra features come with a sizable price increase compared to the Yukon Hybrid, but if you're looking for a little extra luxury and can't stomach the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid's starting price of $73,135, the Denali might look like a happy medium.

2010 Ford Taurus

This big, bold sedan is the new Ford Taurus. In the past 20 years, the most successful passenger car Ford has ever produced was the original Taurus. Since then, its trucks and SUVs have been hits, but no single car has risen to the heights of the Taurus. Two years ago, Ford brought the name back on an existing car and tried to relight the fire. Now, the company has significantly redesigned the Taurus — which rides on a platform that's nearly identical to the recently released Lincoln MKS' — offering more content at the exact same price as the outgoing 2009 model. Yes, Ford has announced a price: The 2010 Taurus will be $25,170, not including an $825 destination charge. What do you get for that price? A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, with manual shift paddles available on the uplevel SEL and Limited trim levels. Also standard are 17-inch alloy wheels; 18-, 19- and 20-inchers are also available. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option. The suspension is all-new as well, but, like the MKS and previous Taurus, the car will likely feel like it rides high off the ground — an attribute buyers enjoy. Ford also promises improved fuel efficiency versus the outgoing Taurus' 18/28 mpg city/highway.There's also a host of available technology and other options, including adaptive cruise control, a collision warning system, push-button start, keypad keyless entry, MyKey — which allows parents or fleets to restrict certain types of driving — Cross Traffic Alert, Sync, voice-activated navigation, and Active Motion seats. What the heck is that? Basically, the optional seats send minute stimulation to an occupant's legs and back to help avoid fatigue and back pain. This is a lot of car here. We don't have specs on the interior dimensions, but we assume they'll be similar to the comfortable MKS — which starts at $38,490. The top-of-the-line 2009 Taurus starts at $32,520 with all-wheel drive. Once we get the full list of standard features for the Taurus, we'll be interested to see how they stack up.
2010 Ford Mustang

Ford has done it again. Like the latest reimagining of the Ford Focus, the company has kept almost everything mechanical about the 2009 Mustang intact and created a new, stylized exterior and an improved interior. It's a smart business move, and the looks are still striking. However, we don't expect the 2010 version to drive a whole lot differently than the 2009.That's because Ford says it has taken the improvements it made to last year's Bullit special edition — with its tweaked exhaust, suspension and other bits — and made it the basis for the 2010 Mustang. Ford says it has also added more sound-deadening for a quieter ride and moved the radio antenna to the rear so it creates less wind noise. We're happier to see the addition of standard stability control and seat-mounted side airbags.Inside, the Mustang's interior gets improved materials and a new center stack of controls. The style, however, remains thoroughly retro, like the previous model. Still, Ford made a major leap with the Focus' interior, and that should translate here as well.Overall, the exterior is different enough to stand out, but it sure doesn't overwhelm us, like the new designs Chevy and Dodge gave us with the new Camaro and Challenger, respectively.

2010 Ford Fusion

Ford used the previous Fusion to usher in its new three-bar grille, which has been a huge hit with buyers. The all-new Fusion has an even bolder chrome grille, as if announcing to the world, "Yes, bigger is better." The "better" part comes in the slew of improvements Ford has made to its new midsize sedan, from more powerful and efficient engines to a quieter cabin.Besides the new design, the features that will get people most excited are under the hood. With a lineup of three engines — not including the Fusion Hybrid, which we'll detail separately — that are not only more powerful than the outgoing model but also get better mileage than the competition, shoppers will have two big reasons to check out the new Fusion. The base four-cylinder is now 2.5 liters; it's also used in the 2009 Ford Escape SUV. Here it produces 175 horsepower, and Ford says it will get 2 more mpg than the four-cylinder Toyota Camry, which gets 32 mpg. We'll see if Ford updates its figures during the show this week, but if the Fusion four-cylinder gets 34 mpg on the highway it will be the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan on the market. The gains in efficiency are due to the new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Ford says it also gains a second in 0-60 tests, besting both the Honda Accord and the Camry. The 3.0-liter V-6 from the 2009 Fusion gets upgraded by nearly 20 horses, to 240 horsepower, while getting a modest bump in efficiency of 1 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway. The totals for 2009 were 18/26 mpg city/highway. The 3.0-liter engine is flex-fuel capable, and will produce 250 hp when running on E85 ethanol. Both the four-cylinder and the 3.0-liter V-6 have a sharper turning radius than the 2009, trimming an entire foot off those figures, which should make them feel more nimble. The new 3.5-liter V-6 comes only in a new Sport version, with 263 hp. It also gets standard 18-inch wheels and different suspension tuning than the other two models. It gets a larger lower grille so it looks more menacing, as well. The two V-6s come with a standard six-speed automatic transmission with an optional sport-shift feature. Both V-6 models will also be available with optional all-wheel drive.Inside all models is a fancy new gauge cluster with new lighting and a welcome screen. Ford says it's upgraded the windshield, front windows and sound-deadening materials to make the Fusion quieter than the Accord and Camry; it even offers test results on that. We'll have to wait until we drive it to see if it's a marked improvement.New materials cover the dashboard, and the center stack of controls features an entirely new layout. An optional navigation system sports an enormous 8-inch LCD screen. The 2010 Fusion will also have a blind-spot monitoring system that not only checks your blind spots while you're on the highway, but also alerts you if cars are approaching when you're backing out of a parking spot. The latest version of Ford's Sync entertainment system, now with 911 dialing, will also be offered. It was standard in certain models last year, but Ford hasn't broken down specifics for 2010 yet. Its previous option price was around $400.We're very intrigued by many of Ford's claims as far as the new Fusion's mileage are concerned. If it is indeed as efficient as they say, and if the looks attract attention, it could be a major hit for the company, just like the first Fusion was.

2010 Fisker Karma

Fisker Automotive took last year's Detroit auto show by surprise with a plug-in hybrid concept called the Karma. The surprise wasn't that it was a plug-in — a technology that a year later still hasn't hit the market from any manufacturer — it was the fact that the Karma looked like an Italian supercar, and that it had four doors yet still looked stunning. Now, the Irvine, Calif.-based company has rolled out its 2010 production version of the Karma. Last year's concept was actually more of a prototype, so the real thing looks just as stunning. The Karma is basically a battery-powered electric car with an onboard range-extending generator, not unlike Chevrolet's much-anticipated Volt. It's technically also a series hybrid because the generator's added power can increase the car's speed when combined with the juice from the battery. Running on battery alone — called Stealth mode — the car can reach 95 mph. In Sport mode, with the gas engine generating electricity, the top speed is 125 mph (electronically limited from a possible 150 mph, according to Fisker). Regardless of mode, the 0-60 time is 5.8 seconds. The two motors drive all four wheels, and safety features like antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are standard. The car's range on battery power is 50 miles. A full charge can take as little as eight to 10 hours with 240 volts (the amount some electric ovens, dryers and furnaces use), or in excess of 15 hours on a 110-volt household current. The Karma's large roof is a solar panel that helps hold a charge when the car is parked outside. Fisker says it's even good for four to five miles of range per week — if it's sunny all day, every day. After exploring options stateside, Fisker decided to hand Karma manufacturing duties to Valmet Automotive of Finland. The company hopes to sell 15,000 of the cars per year. Fisker has pre-sold more than 1,000 since the prototype's debut last year, with another surge expected with this unveiling. Even if it weren't a cutting-edge hybrid, an exotic sports car like the Karma would be a bargain at $87,900. With the government tax credit, it's $80,400.

2010 Chevrolet Spark

In its rush to show the public its upcoming subcompact car, the Spark, GM rolled out a concept show car. Usually when a company announces a new production car to go on sale in less than a year, the car shown is a pre-production model with a working engine and an interior that's basically what you'll find at the dealership. The Spark was so rushed that the concept shown includes a badge that says "Beat," the name of the previous concept car that the Spark will be based on. The car shown as the Spark today, however, is not the same exact car as that older concept. There are standard headlights you'd see in a production car of this class, and the biggest news is that there are four doors instead of two.Chevy was light on details about the engine or any other specifics about the Spark. We'll follow the development of the car as its on-sale date at the end of 2009 approaches. We'd guess a more production-ready car will debut at a future car show in Washington, D.C., Chicago or New York.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox

The Chevrolet Equinox hasn't been a very competitive SUV for a number of years. Chevy hopes to change that with the all-new 2010 model debuting at the Detroit auto show. Most notable about the new Equinox is the fact that it incorporates the new Chevy grille with very strong fender flares and headlights that look more akin to the GMC Acadia than the Chevy Malibu or Traverse. The profile and rear also resemble Mercedes' SUVs, like the M- and GL-Class. It's a handsome package, to be sure. Inside, the cabin takes a page from the new Chevy Malibu, with its twin-cockpit design scheme. What's interesting in the new Equinox is a center stack of controls and readouts that are entirely new to the GM family. Upgrades and advancements in these areas are rare, so this should bode well for the new SUV.There are two engine options, both new and both featuring direct fuel injection to save fuel. The base models get a 182-horsepower four-cylinder that's good for 21/30 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive and 20/27 mpg with all-wheel drive. The V-6 packs 255 horsepower and returns 18/25 mpg with front-wheel drive and 17/24 with all-wheel drive. These fuel estimates are slightly better than those of the V-6 Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan Murano, which return 17/24, 18/24 and 18/23 mpg with front-wheel drive, respectively. The four-cylinder model gets better highway mileage than the Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Jeep Patriot, all of which are smaller vehicles than the Equinox. At 187.8 inches long, the Chevy is more than 7 inches longer than the Saturn Vue with which it shares a platform, but it's an inch shorter than the outgoing model. At 3,770 pounds, it's also 55 pounds lighter than the Vue. It packs 31.4 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row, and 63.7 cubic feet with the second row folded flat. Cargo room was always a drawback in the new Vue, which has 29.2/56.4 cubic feet. Considering the extra length of the Equinox, this isn't a huge upgrade — it falls short of both the outgoing Equinox and the Ford Edge, but is very close to the Nissan Murano. We're sure this will be a greatly improved Equinox, especially given the Vue has proved to be a highly competitive model in the segment. With improved fuel efficiency and an attractive look inside and out, it should win over shoppers in this segment.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro was revealed online months ago, but this is the first major U.S. auto show where the muscle car will be shown. Orders are already being taken for the car, which goes on sale next spring; about 7,000 people have already put their name down for one. If you've been hiding under a rock, here are the basics:There are two engines, a base 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 pumping out 300 horsepower and 26 mpg highway, and a 6.2-liter V-8 with an estimated 422 hp and 23 mpg on the highway.LS, LT The LS and LT get the V-6 engine with 300 hp, 273 pounds-feet of torque and either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, plus 18-inch wheels standard. Stability control, four-wheel-disc brakes and an independent rear suspension are standard on all models. There will be an RS appearance package available for LT and SS models with high-intensity-discharge headlamps, a spoiler, unique taillights and 20-inch wheels. Seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags will also be standard.SS Move up — way up — to the SS and the 422-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 that breathes life into the base Corvette will be under its hood, complete with an extra hood vent. A six-speed manual — also borrowed from the Corvette — and six-speed automatic transmission will be available. The automatic will feature cylinder deactivation to conserve fuel at cruising speeds. The SS will also feature Competitive and Sport modes, with launch control for the manual models. All of that should move the 3,860-pound SS — the LT weighs 3,741 pounds — pretty darn quickly, though no performance numbers were released.GM also says the following will be available, but not necessarily standard: Bluetooth, premium Boston Acoustics sound system, USB connectivity, rear park assist, remote vehicle start, OnStar and XM Satellite Radio. No navigation option was mentioned. Of course, neither was a moonroof, and one is clearly shown in a number of the press photos. For those interested, the trunk is 11.3 cubic feet, which is smaller than the 2009 Mustang or Challenger. Front legroom is on par with those two muscle cars, but there is an inch less headroom than in the Mustang and 2 less than in the Challenger. The gas tank holds 19 gallons, which is bigger than either of those cars' tanks.

2010 Cadillac SRX

We didn't really have to imagine too hard about what the final production version of the SRX would look like. Cadillac had made it well-known that it would be nearly identical to the Provoq concept it showed at last year's Detroit auto show, and wouldn't you know, it does. That's not a bad thing, as the new SRX is a handsome-looking SUV.We'll get into the name "SRX" and how little the new SRX shares with the old SRX, but first we have to address the new engines under the hood. There will be two distinct power plants with no differentiation in trim level. The base SRX will feature a smaller version of the V-6 engine found in the Cadillac CTS sedan. Here, the V-6 engine is 3.0 liters instead of 3.6 and will put out 260 horsepower instead of the 306 hp it makes in the CTS. It features direct injection and a six-speed automatic transmission to aid in fuel economy.Optional will be an all-new 2.8-liter, turbocharged V-6 engine good for 300 hp. Why wouldn't GM just give it the bigger V-6 from the CTS that produces 306 hp? We're guessing it has to do with fuel economy, but at press time no mileage numbers had been provided by GM.All-wheel drive will also be optional, and it features an electronic limited-slip differential that sends needed power to wheels on either side of the car as well as front and rear. With an optional towing package, the SRX can tow 3,500 pounds. The interior is similar in design to the new CTS as well, with a navigation screen that rises up out of the dashboard. The top of the dash is also hand-stitched leather, a recent trend in Cadillac interiors. Bluetooth is standard, while options will include a built-in hard drive for music, a power liftgate, and a rear entertainment system featuring screens in both headrests. The 2010 SRX rides on an entirely new platform from the current 2009 SRX and is 4.7 inches shorter but 2.5 inches wider. How does that translate to interior room? Nearly every dimension — headroom, legroom and hip room — is reduced in the new car, with the exception of shoulder room, which is up slightly. Cargo room is 29.2 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 61.2 with them down, versus 32.4 and 69.5 cubic feet in the 2009 SRX. That's also less cargo room than the Lincoln MKX, the new Lexus RX and the Acura MDX.Pricing, mileage and an on-sale date that's more concrete than "the second quarter of 2009" have not been released yet, but will prove to be mighty important in how well the SRX — no matter how good-looking it is — will do in a crowded field.

2010 Buick LaCrosse

Buick is hoping its complete redesign of the LaCrosse sedan will be as successful at bringing in new buyers as its Enclave crossover was last year. After perusing the specs and these eye-catching pics, we'd have to say it's got a shot, especially compared to the model's sedate predecessor. The new LaCrosse may look more compact than the 2009, but it's only 1.1 inches shorter. It's nearly 500 pounds heavier, however, and that's without the optional all-wheel drive. Not to worry: The 2010 offers a pair of more powerful direct-injected V-6s that should return mileage similar to the outgoing model's 17/28 mpg. Both are based on Cadillac's new V-6.In the base LaCrosse CX and midlevel CXL, drivers get the 255-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 that was introduced in the 2010 Cadillac SRX. The old LaCrosse had 200 hp. The CXL will also have optional all-wheel drive. The top-of-the-line CXS will have the same 3.6-liter V-6 as Cadillac's CTS, but with less horsepower, at 280. Both engines are teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. Mileage numbers have not been released, but we'd expect the CXS to do slightly better than the CTS' 17/26 mpg.The LaCrosse is based on GM's new global midsize sedans but is slightly larger. GM has not revealed interior specifications, so we don't know how headroom, legroom and the size of the trunk measure up. Because it's based on the global sedans, we expect/hope that the new LaCrosse will handle better than the old one; perhaps the characteristic floaty driving feel of big Buicks is at an end. The company promises "quiet tuning" to keep the cabin isolated from road and wind noise.Oh, and did we mention the gadgets? Standard features weren't broken down, but offered in the car will be navigation, Bluetooth, a USB port, a backseat DVD system with dual screens, and more. Buyers will be lucky if the USB input comes standard.Pricing for the 2009 LaCrosse starts at $25,640, and we'd hope the 2010 stays near that mark. Because of the advanced engines, though, it's more likely to start around the $28,000 range to be competitive with the Acura TSX, which starts at $29,000.

2009 BMW Z4

BMW has radically redesigned its Z4 roadster. The new edition features a retractable hardtop, which seems to be a must these days. It's also a lot longer — 5.8 inches — while the wheelbase grows just 0.1 inches. Under the hood is the same six-cylinder from the previous generation, producing 255 horsepower, or for the first time the Z4 can be had with the same 300-hp, twin-turbo six-cylinder offered in the 1, 3 and 5 Series. The exterior design is what everyone will be talking about, with its numerous creases, a long hood that slopes abruptly downward, and aggressive-looking headlights. What might be overlooked is the entirely new interior design, which is much more upscale than the previous generation's sparse look. The second-generation iDrive system will also be available.BMW says visibility out the side and rear windows is also improved, as is trunk room. When stored, the hardtop is separated from the trunk via a partition, which can be moved for more storage if the hardtop remains up. This is similar to most other retractable hardtops on the market.Like the new 3 Series convertible, the Z4's leather features light-reflective technology to keep it from becoming scorching hot in bright sunlight. The Z4 also promises near-50/50 weight distribution, along with BMW's adjustable Dynamic Drive Control as standard equipment. All of that adds up to what could be one exciting roadster to drive.

2009 BMW X6 M

Have you ever wanted a BMW M performance model, but also thirsted for all-wheel-drive capabilities? Well, the company has heard your cries: BMW just announced two new M models, the X6 M and X5 M. Both are the first M models to feature BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and they claim a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.5 seconds. The X6 was already geared to be a more performance-minded SUV than the X5; we tested both the base and V-8 models on a track and were blown away at their composure. The M version is lowered 10 centimeters and gains much more power (555 horsepower used to be reserved for supercars), bigger brakes and the selectable M mode option we first tested on the M3 last year. The two M models get similar design treatments, but they differ from each model's non-M version with augmented hoods, headlights, front fenders, larger front air dams and 20-inch alloy wheels. They're definitely more menacing-looking, that's for sure. What will all this performance cost? Considering the V-8 version of the X6 starts at $66,500, we'd guess the M would be at least an additional $10,000. The X6 hasn't sold all that well since its first two months on sale. However, speed freaks in need of something unique that can handle foul weather better than a rear-wheel-drive sports car or sedan may be intrigued. Of course, BMW could also offer an all-wheel-drive M3.

2009 BMW X5 M

Do you want a BMW M performance model but live in a northern climate where a lot of horsepower to the rear wheels isn't the most optimum driving setup year-round? Well, here comes BMW to the rescue with the X5 M. Along with the X6 M, this SUV marks the first time an M model has had all-wheel drive. Unfortunately for anyone looking to cart around extra passengers, though, the optional third row of seats in the standard X5 will not be available in the X5 M. Too bad for the parents out there hoping to get their performance jones filled after dropping the kids off at school.Like the new X6 M, the X5 M sports a twin-turbo V-8 good for 555 horsepower and a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.5 seconds. While both M models get similar design treatments, the X5 doesn't look as comfortable in its high-performance trimmings. The augmented hood, headlights, front fenders, larger front air dams and 20-inch alloy wheels look a bit garish on the frumpier X5.BMWs are not what we'd call value propositions. The highest X5 trim level with a V-8 engine starts at $56,200, which is almost $10,000 less than where the X6 starts. We'd guess the M models will be roughly $10,000 more than their non-performance counterparts, so the X5 would likely be the more affordable way to get 555 hp in an all-wheel-drive-SUV package. It's an impressive performance machine on paper, it's just too bad you can't carpool in it.

2009 BMW 7 Series

BMW has taken a scalpel to the all-new fifth-generation 7 Series and sculpted a new look straight out of the playbook of the 6 Series coupe. For the first time, we see a BMW with a flat nose. The redesigned car is slightly bigger and will no doubt be more expensive than the outgoing model.Don't think this is a mild face-lift to keep sales fresh. BMW has altered the frame and chassis with a new blend of steel and aluminum, completely redesigned the interior and dropped two new engines under the hood. The 2009 7 Series also will be the first vehicle to feature a new iteration of the much-maligned iDrive system. Expect to see the new 7 Series at dealerships in early 2009.
*750i, 750Li get 400-horsepower, 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 with 450 pounds-feet of torque
*Optional active steering with rear-wheel steering
*Standard adjustable damping control
*Optional internet access Revised interior
*New iDrive system with improved graphics, digital owner's manual
*Additional environmental controls/knobs/buttons
Ambient lighting
*Optional sliding roof measuring 23.6 inches by 36.2 inches
*Standard parking sensors, backup camera

2010 Audi S4

Audi has announced its next S4 as a competitor to the BMW M3 and others, but really it slots below that car in terms of performance, and in terms of price. We're smart enough to point out that even while the new S4 and its claimed 5.1-second 0-60 time is really impressive, it doesn't compete with the 400-plus horsepower coming from the rest of the German and even U.S. high-performance competition. The M3 hits 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and the C63 gets there in 4.3 seconds (according to manufacturer claims). However, the S4 is always followed by an R S4, which does directly compete with those cars. We personally like the fact that there's a sub-performance-level car from Audi that has all-wheel drive and a standard six-speed manual and still sounds really fast.Other distinctions for the new S4 versus a standard A4 are unique 18-inch wheels, rear LED taillights, an integrated spoiler, revised front and rear ends, and brushed aluminum on the mirrors, as well as sport seats and an optional carbon fiber trim package. The Quattro all-wheel-drive system sends 40 percent of power to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear wheels, with an optional rear differential that varies torque between each of the rear wheels. There are a few bits of bad news to report, though. It'll be an entire year before we get this S4 in the U.S., and we only get the sedan version; no S4 Avant wagon will go on sale in the U.S.

2009 Audi Q5

It's not a shock to see Audi jump into the suddenly crowded compact luxury SUV market. The Q5 will hit the U.S. early next year, and the company says it will be priced in the same range as the competition listed above. Specs show that the Q5 will be taller than — but almost exactly the same length as — the EX35, and about the same overall height as a BMW X3, but longer. To us, that means it will have a useful cargo area, unlike the Infiniti. In the looks department, the Q5 is far from cutting-edge, though the LED taillights are quite something. There won't be any trim levels at launch, just one engine, one drivetrain, one transmission — no choices. Still, Audi's 3.2-liter six-cylinder is a terrific power plant, and most buyers in this segment are looking for all-wheel drive, which the Q5 has.The Q5 adds an aluminum hood and tailgate to lower weight, which both helps with performance and makes it easier to open and close them. Audi's multimedia interface is standard, and there are a ton of high-tech options, including a Bang & Olufsen sound system, heated and cooled cupholders, a power tailgate and a navigation system with real-time traffic.

2010 Audi A5, S5 Cabriolet

The all-new A5 and S5 convertibles will hit the U.S. next year, replacing the current A4 and S4 Cabriolets in Audi's lineup. The move isn't surprising; the new A5 and S5 coupes have sold briskly and won over the Cars.com staff as well.Like the outgoing A4 and S4, the new models will feature retractable soft-tops instead of the newly popular retractable hardtops, like we've seen on BMW and Infiniti. However, the move allows for 11.3 cubic feet of storage volume with the top down. In comparison, the Volvo C70, which is one of the Audis' larger competitors, only offers 6 cubic feet of trunk space with the top down. One major difference between the new convertibles and the coupes is the engine in the S5 Cabriolet; instead of the V-8 in the S5 coupe, the S5 Cabriolet gets a supercharged V-6 that makes 333 horsepower. That means if you pick the open-air version you'll lose 21 hp. We wonder how much of that power will be missed by convertible drivers, though. It's also not a big drop-off in power compared to the S4 Cabriolet, which puts out 340 hp with a thirstier V-8.A5 drivers will get a choice of front- or all-wheel drive in the base, 2.0T models. A5 3.2 models and the S5 come only with all-wheel drive.Prices haven't been announced, but we expect them to be higher than the A4 Cabriolet's $40,750 and S4 Cabriolet's $56,775 starting prices.
